Why Air Fryers Cook Faster
Air fryers circulate hot air rapidly in a small space, creating a convection effect much more intense than a standard oven. This means food cooks faster and at a lower temperature while achieving similar or better crispiness.
Tips for Best Results
Don't overcrowd the basket — air needs to circulate around the food. Cook in batches if needed. Shake the basket or flip food halfway through for even cooking. Lightly spray or brush oil for extra crispiness.
Common Air Fryer Cook Times
| Food | Air Fryer Temp | Time | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chicken wings | 380°F / 195°C | 22-25 min | Flip at 12 min |
| French fries (frozen) | 400°F / 200°C | 15-20 min | Shake at 10 min |
| Salmon fillet | 390°F / 200°C | 8-10 min | No flip needed |
| Chicken breast | 375°F / 190°C | 18-22 min | Flip at 10 min |
| Brussels sprouts | 375°F / 190°C | 12-15 min | Shake at 8 min |
| Bacon | 350°F / 175°C | 8-10 min | Check at 6 min |
Converting oven recipes for the air fryer
An air fryer is a compact convection oven: a fan drives hot air fast around the food, so it cooks quicker and crisper than a conventional oven. The standard conversion — which this tool applies — is to lower the temperature by about 25°F (15°C) and cut the time by roughly 20%. So a tray of fries at 425°F for 25 minutes becomes about 400°F for 20 minutes in the air fryer.
Because air fryers are small and powerful, food cooks from all sides at once, which is great for crisping but means you should check earlier than you think. The biggest mistake is overcrowding the basket: pile it high and the air can't circulate, so food steams instead of crisping. Cook in a single layer, shaking or flipping halfway.
Tips
Preheat for a couple of minutes for anything you want crisp. A light spritz of oil helps browning without deep-frying. Very light foods (leaves, small herbs, paper) can blow into the element, so secure them. And because models vary a lot in power, treat the converted numbers as a starting point and learn your own machine.
Frequently asked questions
What's the rule for oven to air fryer?
Drop the temperature by about 25°F (15°C) and reduce the time by roughly 20%, then check early. This tool does the maths for any temperature and time.
Why isn't my food crisping?
Almost always overcrowding. Air needs to circulate, so cook in a single layer, shake the basket halfway, and a little oil helps. Batches beat a packed basket.
Do I need to preheat an air fryer?
For crisp results (fries, chicken, anything breaded) a 2–3 minute preheat helps. For gentler cooking it matters less.
